Unlike other fighting games, KI has no life bars on the characters, instead there are stamina meters displayed at either end of each character, which deplete if hit with an attack or take damage. When all stamina is depleted, the player is knocked out of the fight temporarily or loses a round depending on how much stamina is left. However, this meter gradually recovers over time, but it can be replenished by finding "Killer Instinct" items scattered throughout levels throughout Act I and Act II. In addition, there is a "combo meter" which builds up as moves are executed. Once the combo meter is full, the next attack will be an "Omni-Combo", which increases the damage of your next attack. Omni-Combo can also be activated by pressing punch and kick at the same time after knocking down your opponent three times in a row. There are no special moves or super combos in this game, just standard moves. Each character has his or her own specific set of standard moves and combos that can be performed any time during battle with another player or computer controlled character. Characters can use their special moves at any time, but they cost one energy bar each to perform; the action button presses must be performed (and broken) in quick succession before the move ends. Every character has different strengths and weaknesses against different opponents and players; the player also learns how to customize their characters' play-style with additional combos and abilities earned by surviving in each level.
